How swing dance helped me adapt to life in Canada

Written by Liz Li, digital marketing specialist at ParticipACTION

My journey into the world of swing dance began in 2019. I was living in Hong Kong at the time, and a friend of mine invited me to a swing dance party. Little did I know that this would eventually lead me to find my active crowd.

What is swing dance?

Before diving into my dance journey, it’s important to understand the origins of swing dance and what it involves. Swing dance originated in the late 1920s and gained widespread popularity during the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. Known for its lively style and bouncy rhythms, swing dance encompasses a variety of forms, including Lindy Hop, Charleston and Balboa. While participants often dance with partners, solo dancing is also common.

With its rich history and dynamic movements, swing dance continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide. To me, it’s so much more than just a type of physical activity — it’s a vibrant community where individuals of all backgrounds come together to enjoy music, movement and connection.

How did I start my swing dance journey?

When I stepped into my first swing dance party, I was met with an inviting atmosphere and friendly people. I knew nothing about swing dance the first time I joined, but I felt embraced by the welcoming community. Advanced dancers generously offered their guidance to beginners like me, creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Plus, during the first hour of the party, there was a teaching session for beginners led by professional dancers.

After attending a few of these parties, I felt the need to learn the steps and moves properly, so I signed up for a beginner course. Unfortunately, it was put on hold due to the pandemic, and it wasn’t until I moved to Toronto from Hong Kong in 2022 that I had the chance to reignite my passion for swing dance.

Benefits beyond the dance floor

Through swing dance, I’ve experienced many benefits that extend beyond the dance floor. First, I’ve forged friendships with fellow dancers, enriching my social life and providing a sense of belonging in my new home. The supportive community has also motivated me to dance more consistently, leading to noticeable improvements in my skills. Plus, being part of an active crowd has provided me with access to valuable resources and opportunities for further exploration within the world of swing dance. Finally, swing dance is a perfect blend of jazz music (my favourite genre), relaxation and social time with friends. I find myself immersed in the upbeat tunes while being surrounded by the warm embrace of the community.

By finding my active swing dance crowd, I’ve discovered more than just a hobby — I’ve found a community that has welcomed me with open arms, enriched my social life, and provided me with opportunities for growth and exploration. If you’re intrigued by the world of swing dance and live in the Toronto area, I encourage you to attend one of Swing Toronto‘s Saturday Swing Parties, where beginners are always welcome to try this fun and transformative activity.
