What is the Community Challenge?
The ParticipACTION Community Challenge is a national physical activity and sport initiative that encourages everyone in Canada to get active throughout June in search of Canada’s Most Active Community.
Who can participate in the challenge?
It is open to everyone, and all minutes tracked on the app and website from June 1 – 30 count toward a community’s total score. After June 30, 50 finalist communities will be invited to submit an application explaining why they deserve to be Canada’s Most Active Community.
Application Now Closed
Thanks to everyone who applied for a grant! Once we have completed the review process, we will be reaching out to all applicants to confirm their application status. We anticipate notifying all applicants by early March.
Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada’s Community Sport for All Initiative, ParticipACTION is providing grants to increase sport and physical activity participation of equity-deserving populations as part of the 2023 Community Challenge. Organizations who receive a grant will be able to use these funds to promote or deliver sport and physical activity opportunities to equity deserving groups, in particular Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, persons with a disability, low-income and newcomers to Canada.
Help your community win
Track your personal physical activity minutes on the ParticipACTION app to help your community win! You also have the chance to win great prizes for yourself when you use the app. Check out the Apple App Store or Google Play and download the ParticipACTION app today.
You can also track physical activity minutes for yourself, your family or an organization on our website (tracking opens in the spring).
ParticipACTION Saputo Signature Grants
ParticipACTION is proud to partner with Saputo for the Community Challenge. Together, we are working towards building healthy communities, one active Canadian at a time.
In 2022, Saputo provided Signature Grants to six incredible organizations from across Canada. These organizations used their $8,500 grants to amplify their participation in the 2022 challenge.
Engaging newcomers in
Check out our conversation with Kabir Hosein, Senior Manager of Operations and Newcomers Engagement, Sport for Life, and Nancy Clement, Manager of the Community Engagement Team at the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada! The conversation focuses on progress we’ve made in developing programs, barriers that still need to be addressed and advice for the future.
Take a read through our research report that summarizes key learnings from our focus group sessions, organizational interviews and surveys focused on Newcomer Engagement in Physical Activity programming.
Meet the 2022 Community Challenge Winner!
Red Deer is Canada’s Most Active Community! Located in Central Alberta, with a population of just over 100,000, Red Deer is a tourist destination and the host of many major sporting events. They stood out amongst their competitors for their enthusiasm and commitment to the challenge, starting with their mayor, who starred in an interactive video challenging all City of Red Deer employees to get involved and unveiling several mini launch events for all residents to participate in.
Partners & funders
A big shout-out and thank you to our partners. Without your support, the challenge would not be possible. Thank you!
