Kids don’t play as much as they used to for a lot of reasons. One, is that kids aged 5 – 11 are spending hours and hours a day being sedentary and 73 percent of 5 – 10 year olds watch TV, play video games or read books in the after-school period.

Why replace screen time with active play?

Moderating kids’ screen time (which includes TV, videos, DVDs, computers, video games, and handheld devices) is KEY for healthy development and staying active. Science has shown that when children increase their daily physical activity, their overall quality of life goes up – they sleep better, see improved academic performance, increase self-esteem and decrease the chances of developing diseases such as heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

In short, physically active kids are generally healthier and happier.

Resources to help you take action

The Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for Children and Youth recommend limiting kids’ screen time to two hours or less a day (and zero screen time for children under the age of two). As well, the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Youth recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day.
