Totally not basic Pumpkin Spice Fitness

Move over, colourful leaves and sweater weather, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is THE unofficial sign of autumn. Judging by the social media countdowns ahead of its availability, it’s much more than a novelty drink; it is the most obvious clue that our seasons are changing.

For many of us, pumpkin spice lattes are the sole reason to get out of bed as days get shorter and nights cooler. Loved, loathed, and obsessively Instagrammed, the PSL (the warm and affectionate shorthand for cozy autumn goodness) is now the official social media mascot of autumn.

“Pumpkin Spice” isn’t so much a precise combination of ingredients, but rather a state of mind. It’s a declaration that you are a champion of the changing seasons. Disciple of the sudden swell of autumnal scents and sounds. It is less a drink than a call to arms.

Together, we embrace fall and say sayonara to summer. Together, we are Pumpkin Spice Warriors.

This fall, let’s turn the Pumpkin Spice Latte on its head. Let’s collectively take our PSL with an extra shot of physical activity.

Like any syrupy concoction tantalizingly topped with whipped crème, PSLs are an indulgent treat, to say the least. Scarves on the table, cross my heart and hope to pie - it’s a seasonal bevvie best consumed sparingly.

But there’s good news, autumn aficionados. We’ve made a Pumpkin Spice Breakthrough. Let’s put that seasonal inclination to good use and embark on a Pumpkin Spice Quest. It’s time to get active.

Do you sense some cool fall weather outside? Get up and strap on your running shoes. Passing a pumpkin on your walk home from school? Time to break into a jog. Orange and yellow leaves outnumbering the green ones? That mean’s its time to get to the gym. Smell the delicious aroma of a passer-by’s PSL? Bike ride time.

And you don’t always need to leave the latte behind. A PSL goes great paired with a brisk walk, as a system warmer after a morning jog, or even as an excuse to bond with your barista after setting a new personal record at the gym.

And what would your PSL say if it could talk? “Take me for a walk,” I reckon.

So plug in those ear buds and take your beverage out strolling. You’ll find what you hear to be both insightful and delicious.

Just add some whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of your accomplishments. Pumpkin Spiced Perfection.
