35 family-friendly activities that will keep your kids entertained for hours
It’s hard to think of new activities to do with your kids day after day. Some are too expensive. Others require a lot of direction, time, and equipment. If only there was a list of quick, fun, and easy activities for you too choose from.
Well now there is: the ParticipACTION 150 Play List. Created by Canadians for Canadians, the list contains activities for every age, every season, and every occasion.
Of course, a list of 150 is a lot to take in, and it does include some activities that require specific pieces of equipment, skills, and direction. So we’ve decided to highlight some of the most family-friendly activities that you can easily check off with your kids.
Activities you can do anywhere and everywhere life takes your family:
Walking – doesn’t get much easier than this. Mix it up by making it into a game or adding in some exercises.
Running – like walking, only faster!
Fitness Activities – think bodyweight exercises like jumping jacks, burpees, squats, push-ups, and sit-ups.
Dancing – it’s hard not to enjoy a good family dance off. No music? Sing your favourite jams.
Tag– you’re it!
AT THE PLAYGROUND
A day at the playground is always a win with these games:
Grounders – like Marco Polo with a jungle gym instead of a pool.
Hopscotch – if it’s not already drawn, grab some chalk and make your own!
Monkey Bars – great for monkeying around.
Swinging – a surprisingly good workout.
4-Square– who will be king?
IN YOUR LIVING ROOM
While watching television or on rainy days:
Pilates – children never have trouble sleeping after “the hundred.”
Yoga– child’s pose is always a family favourite.
Folk/Cultural Dances – from clogging to square-dancing, add a little culture to your dancing.
Tai Chi – calming, relaxing, and great for improving your balance and flexibility.
Wrestling – just be careful not to knock over a lamp!
AROUND THE HOUSE
Fit in some activity and knock a few things off your to-do list at the same time!
Housework – scrubbing and vacuuming can be quite a workout.
Gardening – dig in the dirt, pull some weeds, and grow something beautiful.
Lawn Mowing – it needs to get cut either way.
Raking Leaves – there’s nothing quite like jumping in a giant pile of leaves.
Snow Shoveling – because somehow it always seems to fall in all the wrong places.
AT THE PARK
Add a little excitement to an afternoon at the park with:
Hula Hooping – it’s all in hips!
Hide and Seek – close your eyes and count to 100.
Jump Rope – an easy activity that can quickly get your heart pumping!
Scavenger Hunt – it’s a bit of work to set everything up, but it’s worth it.
Stick Pull – like tug of war, only seated and with a stick instead of a rope.
AT THE BEACH
Lying in the sun isn’t the only thing you can do at the beach.
Swimming – front stroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle—make like a fish and dive in!
Shoreline Cleanup – help keep pristine beaches pristine.
Building a Sandcastle – grab a shovel and get started on the moat!
Beach Volleyball – volleys and spikes galore!
Aquafit – underwater aerobics are the best kind.
ON THE MOVE
Getting from point A to B is naturally active, but you can spice it up with:
Running – you get there faster!
Cycling – bikes rule.
Skateboarding – because four wheels are better than two.
Scootering – a classic activity that never gets old.
Rollerblading – like skating but with wheels instead of blades and done on pavement instead of ice.
