The latest Active Healthy Kids Canada report card on physical activity for children and youth and assigns a “D” grade for Active Transportation and notes that 62 per cent of five- to 17-year-olds use only “inactive modes” of transportation to get to and from school.
Kelly Murumets, president and CEO of ParticipACTION, says that by driving kids to school and to sports, parents are robbing their kids of an opportunity to get a little more exercise into their days. Jennifer Cowie Bonne, CEO of Active Healthy Kids Canada, says schools can help by organizing safe walk-to-school travel plans, as well as provide bike racks outside their buildings.

The 2013 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card found that only 28 per cent of kids walk to school, down from 58 per cent when their parents were the same age. It also found that kids walk for an average of 11 minutes each day, and a mere five per cent of five-to-17-year-olds meet the Canadian physical activity requirements.
Kelly Murumets, president and CEO of ParticipAction, said schoolchildren can add 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity by walking or wheeling to and from school.
