After School Activity Guide and Tracker
Think your kids are active enough after school? Think Again.
What are your kids doing after school? You may want to think again if you think they are being physically active. According to the 2011 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, Canadian children and youth are sitting idle indoors during the after-school period of approximately 3 to 6 p.m., getting a mere 14 minutes, out of a possible 180, of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity. That’s only eight per cent of children’s time in the 3pm to 6pm time zone spent on heart-pumping activities.
The Report Card also tells us that fifty-nine per cent of the after-school time period is spent engaged in sedentary pursuits. And with only seven per cent of Canadian children and youth meeting the current guidelines of 60 minutes of heart-pumping physical activity per day, it’s not surprising that the Report Card grade for physical activity levels for children and youth remains an F. Indeed, that’s a grade we want to raise!
Let’s Get Going!
We think that Canadian children and youth can move more – especially after school! Research shows that children and youth who are physically active during this time period improve their overall daily physical activity levels and health. So, let’s challenge our children and youth to get more active! To help motivate your kids, ParticipACTION has created an after-school activity guide packed with fun, ideas for your kids to do after school. There is also an easy-to-use physical activity tracker so your kids can track how often they are getting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.
